The 17th annual Komen New York City Race for the Cure was the best yet! Close to 22,000 people – including over 1,500 survivors – came out to Central Park on September 9th to help run breast cancer out of town. Runners and walkers lined up at the Central Park West and 77th Street start line, reached down Central Park West as far as the eye could see.

But the Race is not over yet. Pledges and donations for the Race will be accepted until October 31 so please help us achieve our goal of shattering last year’s record of $4.2 million. Our target for 2008 is $5 million so we can fund the $1 million in superior-rated grant proposals we weren’t able to fund last year. Click here to help us reach our target.

Participants included 667 Race teams, as well as families, co-workers, friends and individuals – all determined to fight the disease and achieve the vision of a world without breast cancer.

The Race is the premier fundraiser of Komen Greater New York City. Money raised fund breast health programs and research in the New York metropolitan area – New York City, Long Island, Westchester and Rockland Counties. This year, Komen Greater NYC awarded more than $3.2 million in grants, as well as close to $1 million for national breast cancer research.

The day’s events were hosted by Maurice DuBois and the Women of CBS 2 (Tamsen Fadal, Kristine Johnson, Dr. Holly Phillips, Kate Sullivan and Dana Tyler), along with Valerie Smaldone of New York’s 106.7 fm. Celebrities in attendance included Komen Greater NYC spokespersons, Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker, Judge Judy, Stephen Colbert, Maureen McGovern, and NYC elected officials Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer.

Survivors were able to take advantage of special services in the Survivor Village, including the Ann Taylor Survivor Café and Aromasin Switch Zone. During an emotional morning ceremony, Komen Greater NYC awarded the Survivor Award to Jeanne Mulgrav, NYC Commissioner of the Department of Youth and Community Development and the Co-Survivor Award to Rosalie Coschigano.

After finishing the Race, participants could visit the Sponsor Expo (view Race sponsors) and Komen Mission Tent, where they learned more about Komen Greater NYC and its grantees.

Entertainment included the Blade Academy of Hip Hop Education, Cheer New York, Knicks New York City Dancers and The Love Handles. Along the route, Race participants were entertained by Bond Floats, Brooklyn College Cheerleading Team, Cheer New York, Cycle Sisters Motorcycle Club of Long Island, Fordham University Cheerleaders, Ladies of Harley Lighthouse Chapter, the Moonglowers, Debra Lee Murrow, New York Knicks City Dancers, Scotch Plains Fanwood High School, and the Seton Hall University Cheerleaders.

Please remember, it is not too late to donate. Last year, Komen Greater NYC had to turn down nearly $1 million in worthy grant requests, because it did not have sufficient funding.

Help us reach our goal of $5 million. Komen Greater NYC is accepting pledges and donations through October 31, 2007. Donate online today at
