Food Bank For New York City’s 6th Annual Can-Do Awards

JON BON JOVI’S HONORED AT FOOD BANK FOR NEW YORK CITY’S SIXTH ANNUAL CAN-DO AWARDS DINNER - $1 MILLION DOLLARS RAISED

President Bill Clinton and Bono made surprise appearance last night to support Jon Bon Jovi at the Food Bank For New York City’s Can-Do Awards, where he was honored for his tireless philanthropic efforts and his dedication to helping in the fight against hunger. Designer Kenneth Cole and his wife Maria Cuomo Cole were on hand and presented Jon with the award. The annual event was held at Abigail Kirsch’s Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers on the Hudson River raised $1 million dollars!

Honorary Dinner Chair Michael Stipe, joined co-chairs Mario Batali and Susan Cahn and Master of Ceremonies Stanley Tucci in welcoming over 700 guests who were treated to a star-studded room of Food Back For New York city supporters including Jimmy Fallon, Tom Colicchio, Katie Ford, Katie Lee Joel, Rachael Ray, Steve Buscemi, Helena Christiansen, Mariska Hargitay, Emeril Lagasse, Anthony Bourdain, Josh Charles and New York Giants Chris Canty, among others. Musical performance by Joseph Arthur and the Lonely Astronauts with special guest Mike Mills.

Also honored last night was Bed Stuy Campaign Against Hunger. Auctioneer Billy Harris led the live auction that raised $165,000. Jimmy Fallon and Emeril Lagasse split the first auction item of dinner for 24 friends at your home to be cooked by David Chang, Mario Batali and Tom Colicchio, which went for a whopping $60,000.

The Can-Do Awards Dinner is instrumental in helping to provide support for the 1.3 million New Yorkers who rely on soup kitchens and food pantries to survive. Every dollar donated to the Food Bank provides five meals. This is a pivotal year for the Can-Do Gala as the recession deepens and unemployment continues to rise. Already the level of need has reached crisis proportions. The number of New York City residents having difficulty affording needed food has spiked to nearly 4 million — doubling from approximately 2 million in 2003 — representing almost half of all New York City residents.

Food Bank For New York City recognizes 26 years as the city’s major provider of food to New Yorkers in need. The organization works to end food poverty and increase access to affordable, nutritious food for low-income New Yorkers through a range of programs and services that focus on food sourcing and distribution, education and nutrition, financial empowerment, disaster relief, policy and research.
