GOTO 2011 Summer Event

GOTO 2011 Summer Event

Giving Opportunities To Others (The GOTO Group) enriches the lives of promising, underprivileged middle school students by immersing them in art and music.

The Village Pourhouse was rich with conversation on a recent Tuesday night. But the chatter wasn’t focused on New York sports, it was about Giving Opportunities To Others (GOTO).

A crowd of people filled the top level of the popular pub’s midtown location on August 16th for GOTO’s annual summer fundraiser. Proceeds from the event raised money for scholarships to send underprivileged New York City middle school students to Appel Farm summer arts camp, a 176-acre facility located in bucolic Elmer, New Jersey, where working creative professionals aid campers in developing their raw talents in art, film and music.

Since 2001, GOTO (www.thegotogroup.org) has enriched the lives of inner city kids by providing scholarships to attend immersive arts camps for three consecutive summers. To date, GOTO has raised more than $1 million dollars, sending over 130 middle school students to arts camp for three consecutive summers.

GOTO’s cause is more important now than ever. Faced with budget cuts due to the recent economic decline, New York City area schools have slashed arts education. About 9% of New City Schools do not spend any money on arts education, according to a recent study by the New York City Public Advocate’s Office. Such a statistic is particularly disheartening when considering the apparent impact of arts education on graduation rates. The top third of NYC schools with the highest graduation rates have an average of 40% more spaces and instructors dedicated to the arts than the bottom third, according to a 2009 study by the Center for Arts Education.

GOTO’s mission extends beyond enriching the lives of middle school students. It’s also a great way for young NYC area professionals to network while giving back to their community. When attendees go to a GOTO event they can be sure to meet a large group of young, friendly New Yorkers who are happy to start a conversation with, “so, how did you hear about GOTO?” Isn’t that a better opening line than pointing to a loud television screen and shouting, “Do you like this team?”

For more information go to www.thegotogroup.org. Or contact our volunteer committee at volunteer@thegotogroup.org. And mark your calendars: GOTO’s annual Halloween Costume Party is on Saturday, October 29th. This event sells out every year, so be sure to log on to the web site and check charity happenings for tickets.
