SOUTH FLORIDA SCIENCE MUSEUM TOASTS 50 YEARS OF SCIENCE

SOUTH FLORIDA SCIENCE MUSEUM TOASTS 50 YEARS OF SCIENCE

Blasting off into another 50 years, the South Florida Science Museum toasted the past 50 during Fete du Soleil on April 1st.

More than 200 guests gathered for the spectacular celebration hosted at a private estate in Palm Beach. The evening honored the Museum’s “founding mothers,” members of the Junior League of the Palm Beaches who founded the Museum in 1961 during the era’s race to space.

As guests entered the private Palm Beach estate it felt as if they were walking through a collage of Science Museum exhibits. A planetarium was projected throughout the grand entrance and dinosaur tracks led them to the outside terrace. Guests also enjoyed the Museum's authentic astronaut suit and space capsule while mingling with special guest Dr. Richard Crippen, a past director of the space shuttle program and Kennedy Space Center and NASA astronaut. In addition, party-goers had a chance to be a part of the Champagne Wall of Fame which displayed 50 bottles of champagne and purchasers were registered for a chance to win an Estate Collection bracelet generously donated by Worth Avenue’s Betteridge Jewelers.

To highlight the evening, guests gathered poolside under nature’s own star-filled planetarium for a dramatic fashion presentation by Saks Fifth Avenue. As models strutted the waterfront catwalk, their glamorous Pamella Roland gowns seemed to float against the breathtaking setting.

"Fete du Soleil was created by the Junior League as the Museum's annual fundraising tradition," said Frances Fisher, event host committee co-chairman. "It was an honor to celebrate 50 years of the museum's history and the continuing inspiration and enjoyment it brings to our community. We are grateful to have this anniversary marked by the support of so many wonderful people including our Host Committee of parents with children growing up in the museum, many of whom have fond childhood memories of the museum themselves."

In another homage to the Junior League, Fete chairmen recognized key supporters with the “Orchid Award.” For outstanding service to the Museum, Nancy Myers, Sydelle Meyer, Karen Swanson and John Niblack were presented with beautiful orchids. To cap off the celebration, event leadership gathered with champagne glasses in hand to lead guests in singing “Happy Birthday” to the Museum while enjoying a special birthday cake and a toast to the Museum’s service to our community as a finale of fireworks lit the night from a 14-foot birthday confection.
