The 54th Annual Viennese Opera Ball in New York

The 54th Annual Viennese Opera Ball in New York

Some came in Masks, but all came in their most formal attire as guests arrived at the 54th Annual Viennese Opera Ball (VOB) in New York City on Friday, February 6, 2009.

Strauss’ “Prince Orlofsky” (“Die Fledermaus”) welcomed guests to a “Masked Night at the Opera” and “host” the legendary charity gala at his fictional “villa” in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria.

This marked the first time that the Ball took place in the midst of a mini opera, as “Prince Orlofsky” brought together two people looking for true love over the course of the evening. Peter Duchin will continue to provide his special musical touch throughout the evening filled with new twists. www.vienneseoperaball.us

Debutantes, Diplomats and Dignitaries “Open” the international Ball long regarded as one of New York’s “greatest annual events,” garnering worldwide media coverage for over five decades. There is nothing formulaic about the event; with four generations of guests (from 14 to 94 years of age!), the Ball reflected the universal appeal of Austria’s cultural and culinary treasures. The gala evening featured Opera, Classical Music and Ballroom Dancing including, of course, Waltzing. The Ball ran from 9:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., and included a four-course dinner service. The “Tanz Bar” (post-Ball party) ran from 1:00 to 4:00 a.m. and included a buffet supper with its Signature Goulash Soup, as well as multiple venues: Jazz Band, Dance Band, DJ, Vienna Coffee House with Viennese pastries, and Casino.

Although traditional in style, the Ball is always innovative. In addition to its masked mini opera theme, the 2009 VOB Signature Collection marked the first time that original works from fashion designers, artists, Olympians, corporations, and celebrities have been donated for the Ball’s charitybuzz.com online auction (January 28th – February 18th).

After 53 years of donating to medical and humanitarian 501(c)(3) organizations, the Ball has expanded its philanthropic outreach and made its first international donation to a global humanitarian organization dedicated to helping under-served children. The official announcement was made the night of the Ball.
