The Conservatory Ball

The Conservatory Ball

The New York Botanical Garden celebrates its 120th Anniversary with its annual spring gala, The Conservatory Ball, on June 2, 2011.

The evening will begin with cocktails at 7:30 p.m. in the Perennial Garden, before moving to dinner and dancing in the Conservatory Tent. The Conservatory Ball, which has been listed among New York’s top benefits, is one of the Botanical Garden’s most important fundraising parties of the year. More than 700 guests from New York society, dressed in ball gowns and tuxedos, enter the grounds winding through flowering trees, a beautiful herb garden, and thousands of peonies. With a backdrop of 250 acres of dazzling beauty and magnificent landscape, The Conservatory Ball, cited as “the best dressed and most elegant evening” every year, will be the most glamorous party of the spring season.

The Gala Chairmen are Mrs. Timothy M. George, Mrs. Charles B. Johnson, Mrs. Sylvester F. Miniter IV, and Mrs. B. Robert Williamson, Jr. The Honorary Chairmen are Mrs. Jeremy H. Biggs, and Mrs. Richard L. Chilton, Jr. The Chairmen’s Committee consists of Mrs. Christopher Cuomo, Andrea Henderson Fahnestock, Mrs. Henry P. Johnson, Mrs. Edward Kaplan, Christian Leone, Mrs. George P. Taylor V, Carmen M. Thain, and Mish Tworkowski. The Journal Chairmen are Alexandra Lebenthal, Amy Todd Middleton, and Mrs. Jean Putzer. The Chairmen Emeriti are Mrs. Coleman P. Burke, Mrs. Marvin H. Davidson, Mai Hallingby Harrison, Mrs. John S. Hilson, Mrs. Carlisle Jones, and Mrs. John R. Robinson. Principal Benefactors of the evening are Mr. and Mrs. Richard L. Chilton, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Johnson, and William D. Rondina.

Themed “An Evening at the Alhambra,” The Conservatory Ball will also include a special viewing of Spanish Paradise: Gardens of the Alhambra. Inside the landmark Enid A. Haupt Conservatory will be an extravagant horticultural display inspired by the historic garden designs of the Islamic palace city of the Alhambra on the hilltop above Granada. Set pieces that evoke flowing fountains, elegant arcades, and an intimate courtyard provide a dramatic setting for cypresses, myrtles, roses, citrus, pomegranates, and dozens of other plants cultivated in the Andalusian region of southern Spain from the 13th century to the present. All proceeds raised by The Conservatory Ball will support the core mission of the Garden, including internationally acclaimed programs in children’s education and plant research and conservation.
